I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list

River Thames

The River Thames is synonymous with London, after all if it wasn't for the river the Romans would not have built Londinium and the rest, as they sort of say, wouldn't be history.

Of course London is only a small portion of the Thames - the river starts in deepest Gloucestershire and the wends its way over 180 miles before leaving the capital.

There is a National Trail following (almost) the entire course of the river from its seasonal source to the mighty river that defines London.

One of the challenges is deciding which direction to walk the Thames, with most guides recommending starting in London and working back to the source. Personally I think that would be a very disappointing way of doing the walk, see why in the Source - Lechlade section.

Having said that walking the in the other direction also has a somewhat disappointing finish as well. This guide follows the entire walk, beginning at the source via Oxford, Reading and Windsor before finishing at the Thames Barrier.
