Old Moaner Travel

I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list

East Coast

KwaZulu- Natal province was created in 1994 with the merger of the provinces of KwaZulu and Natal. Geographically it is diverse with the Drakensberg Mountains to the west, the Indian Ocean coast to the east and verdant plains in between and it has an area almost the same size as Portugal.

Lake St Lucia is one of the largest estuary lakes in Africa and is home to 800 Hippo’s and around 1,000 Nile crocodiles and more species of birds than you can imagine.

Numerous companies provide boat trips on the lake, usually lasting around two hours and you have the opportunity to get really close to the hippopotami and crocodiles. Expect to pay around 200 rand (£10) for the trip.

Durban is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and it’s a city of contrasts. The Golden Mile is the main coastal resort with a golden beach facing the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Hippo basking in Lake St Lucia

Well maintained and very popular in the day with plenty of attractions the area is not so good at night, especially the roads leading off the Golden Mile where prostitution and drug dealing seems rife.

Other attractions include the Moses Mabhida Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and a Skycar ride to the top offers fantastic 360° panoramic views of the city. Close to the Stadium is the Suncoast Casino.

The Durban Botanic Gardens is one of the best free shows in town, beautiful gardens set around a lake the gardens are very popular for wedding photographs.

Durban Indian Market

Downtown is like any other city although those who know Belfast well may do a double take as the City Hall is a replica of the City Hall in Belfast.

The Indian Market is well worth a visit.

Care should be taken when venturing out after dark, especially in the coastal area.
