Kennet and Avon Canal
Technically the Kennet and Avon Canal is a mixture of canal and river and is only a “traditional” canal between Newbury and Bath. East of Newbury it is the River Kennet and west of Bath it is the River Avon.
Whatever it is the waterway is an 87 mile link between Reading and Bristol, restored in the latter half of the 20th century after being allowed to decline and become derelict in places.
It was as late as 2011 before the route was officially designated a waterway again, which means there is a legal requirement for the route to be kept navigable.
The undoubted highlight of the waterway are the Caen Hill Locks, near Devizes, consisting of a flight of 29 locks. Broken into three sections it is the middle section of 16 back to back locks, which appears as the iconic image.
